Pit Firing

Pit Firing
Main Photo: Here is the pit alight with our pots baking beneath the wood and flames.

It’s important to me that pottery classes are interesting and exciting so I introduce new techniques regularly. I began running  ‘Pit Firing’ sessions as people became interested in the history of clay and ancient firing techniques – ‘Pit Firing’ is a way of firing clay that dates back to neolithic times.

You can have great fun firing clay as our ancestors did… digging the pit, filling it with sawdust and organic materials, placing your pots in the pit then setting fire to it. No doubt you’ll have worked up an appetite, so the day is finished with cheese and biscuits along with a drop of something nice!”
